Permanent lighting strongly inhibits the spawning of Ciona intestinalis. The inversion of light and darkness with regard to the normal day and night cycle results in a shifting of the time of spawning, which occurs with regularity shortly before the end of a period of darkness. The inhibitory action of light prevails over the stimulating effect of the removal of the neural gland: in permanent lighting the removal of the neural gland is not followed by an increase of the spawning rate.
